Cats vs. Dogs

Battle for the color spectrum!

Pet Vision allows the user to convert pictures from the normal human visual spectrum to either a dog’s OR a cat’s visual spectrum.  Here are some common questions you may have about this:

Do dogs and cats have the same color spectrum?

No,  dogs and cats have similar color vision, but it is different.

First, lets explore some of the basics of color vision.  Eyes, in most creatures, have two types of receptor cells.  These are the ‘rods’ and the ‘cones.’  Rods react to the intensity of the light  whereas cones respond to the wavelength of the light.  For more on light wavelengths check out Wikipedia’s article on the Electromagnetic Spectrum.

Scientists have measured the specific wavelengths that the cones in dog’s and cat’s eyes can measure.  Dogs’ cones react to a different frequency than cats’ cones, so the visual spectrum for a cat is different than a dogs.

How different are they?

Although they have distinct differences they are similar.  Here is the same picture processed using Pet Vision for both a dog and a cat.
